TRAX, 2 September, 2001 Trax has become one of those shows you just can’t afford to miss, and if this year is anything to go by it’s going to stay that way for a long, long time. Silverstone is a great venue and because Trax comes towards the end of the summer the turnout is huge with everyone making the most of what’s left of the good weather Once you’ve ploughed your way through that lot you arrive at the track itself, which is when the mayhem really begins. Having a go with your motor, out on the Silverstone circuit, is one of the great things about Trax. But be warned, you may go onto the track with a top car, then a few minutes later you may get towed off with a pile of mashed metal. This year it was the turn of a 911 Turbo and a Scooby P1. Ouch!! Just hope they had the brains to take out track insurance. Another great thing about this show is the variety of cars that turn up. You get everything from the smooth-body fetishists at the RS Owners Club to the mentalists at the Max’d Car Club. Venture too far though and you’ll enter the bizarre world where the Rover SD1 and Opel Manta rule. Weird stuff indeed. With so many sorted motors to choose from it was difficult to pick best of show, but Gary Gooding’s stonking 500bhp RX7 on 19s and Keith Walker’s awesome Jap-kitted Saxo were real standouts. |

GTi INTERNATIONAL 2, 2 Sept, 2001 Big rims or small, bodykits or flushed detailing, stripped out interiors or fat ICE, it doesn’t really matter, as long as your car rolled out of a VAG plant and had a VW, Seat or Audi badge slapped on its arse, you had to be at Gti International. All the faces on the VeeDub scene were there, with Polos mingling with Corrados, Golfs, Beetles and even a seriously modded Vento. If the sight of all these Dubs sitting still and looking pretty started to chafe, there was always the 0-60 thrash. They would have had a full quarter mile, but as the airfield is operational, the organisers thought the pilots would be a bit pissed at seeing a blown Golf rip past them on the runway. Never mind. |

Ultimate Street Car, 10-12 August, 2001 Ultimate Street Car, 10-12 August, 2001 The weather was shite, the beer was warm and the ’Pod was heaving. But as always Ultimate Street Car was bigger than Jordan’s shirt potatoes, and juwere enough barbies to keep the average Aussie going till the next millenniumst as much fun. The action on the drag strip was blinding. If there’s one thing you have to remember at USC it’s to never laugh at sheddy looking cars, especially if they’re on the strip. But as always happens much guffawing kicked in as a shitty-looking Maestro turbo pulled up to the start line. But judging by his times he must have pissed off a fair few so called sorted motors like GTi-Rs and Scoobies. Unlike more than a few car shows we could mention, which tend to be no more than a few nice motors in a field surrounded by their chamois-clutching owners, USC has that essential element – gorgeous women by the bucketload. The highlight of the weekend had to be Miss Ultimate Street Car. Breasts bounce and asses wiggled. |
